AoE GrindingBy now, you know the drill. This time around we’ll be covering grinding locations for the 60s. Don’t forget to check out parts one, two, three and four in case you missed them.

The 60s

First, congratulations on working your way through the “vanilla” content! Now it’s time to work your way through Outland, and soon… Northrend! One thing to be aware of while grinding in Outland is that casters tend to be a bit more common place. However, you’ve got a few more tools at your disposal now to help with that. For example, if you come across a cluster of casters, use Avenger’s Shield to help pull them. Also, don’t forget to add Hammer of the Righteous to your rotation to burn down packs of mobs more quickly. Otherwise, your rotation should remain much the same as it has all along.

Hellfire Peninsula

hellfirepeninsula

There are a few areas in Hellfire with densely packed mobs for you to grind on. Just outside the Temple of Telhamat and just Southeast of Honor Hold, for example, you’ll find large packs of Carrion Birds you could grind on. However, the only major redeeming quality to these birds is that they drop the occasional bit of meat for cooking; otherwise, their loot isn’t so hot, so I wouldn’t really recommend them.

Point A on the map corresponds to The Great Fissure, where you’ll find a whole mess of flayers you can kill. These mobs have much better loot, and tend to congregate in packs, making it easy to gather them up. The only snag you’ll find at this location are the worms that tend to make unexpected appearances, burrowing up out of the ground to say hello. They can be difficult to deal with at times, but the flayers are melee mobs, so you should have no problems pulling your packs to the worms when they appear. These mobs range in level from 57 to 62, making them great for players level 58 to 60.

Point B on the map corresponds to the Expedition Armory, which several packs of undead call home. The one thing to watch out for here is that some mobs in the area have a charge/knockdown effect that you’ll need to be mindful of as you pull, and there are several casters in the area, but if you stick largely to the outskirts of the area, you should be in good shape. These mobs range in level from 57 to 60, making them great for players around level 58.

Zangarmarsh

zangarmarsh

Point A on the map corresponds to the Umbrafen village, which provides a variety of mobs to grind on. Be wary of the casters in the village; they’re relatively spread out, though, so they shouldn’t pose much of a problem. The mobs here range in level from 58 to 61, making them ideal for players 58 to 60.

Points B, C and D on the map correspond to various naga camps found around Zangarmarsh. There are casters (the females) to watch out for, but they don’t post much of a problem. They’re spread out enough to pull melee groups to them as you gather mobs. The mobs in these locations range in level from 61 to 64, making them great for players level 60 to 62.

Terokkar Forest

terokkarforest

By now, you’ve no doubt noticed that we’re working through the zones in Outland at a fairly quick pace, spending only a couple levels in each zone. There’s actually a much wider variety of mobs available in each zone, however, they tend to come in small pockets, and few of them are really what we’re looking for: densely packed humanoids with better loot and fewer casters. For skinners, there are tons of beasts available in each zone, but they’re relatively spread out which makes for less efficient grinding.

Point A on the map above corresponds to the Bonechewer Ruins, a location packed with orcs. There are casters here, but Avenger’s Shield is more than adequate to help you round them up. Point B on the map corresponds to Firewing Point, where packs of blood elves can be found. One thing to note about this location is that there are several large packs of casters here. However, the casters are clumped closely together, so Avenger’s Shield makes rounding them up extremely easy. As an added bonus, the blood elves here drop Scryer tokens. The mobs in these locations range in level from 62 to 64, making them ideal for players level 60 to 62.

One thing you’ll notice is that the introductory levels of Outland are only ideal for players up to level 62, in terms of ideal mob level for best experience returns. You’ll want to supplement your grinding experience by completing quests as you go along. Leveling at this point, using both grinding and questing, will go very quickly and you’ll find yourself in the mid-60s before you know it.

Now, you can progress on to Nagrand at level 62, but keep in mind that you won’t be able to pick up any quests there until 64.

Nagrand

nagrand

Nagrand is easily one of my favorite zones in Outland; it provides a lot of great opportunities for grinding for a wide range of levels, and the loot is fairly good.

Point A on the map corresponds to the Burning Blade Ruins. You’ll find a group of densely packed ogres located here with only a few casters. The mobs here range in level from 63 to 66, making them ideal for players level 62 to 64.

Point B on the map corresponds to the Kilsorrow Fortress where you’ll find a whole mess of orcs to annihilate. The upside to this particular grinding location is they also drop Aldor tokens. The mobs here range in level from 64 to 67, making them great for players level 62 to 65.

Point C on the map corresponds to the Sunspring Post where several densely packed groups of mobs can be found. There are casters here, but they shouldn’t pose much of a problem. The mobs here range in level from 64 to 67, making them great for players level 62 to 65.

Finally, Point D on the map corresponds to Oshu’gun. You’ll find a wide variety of mobs here. Of particular note are the voidspawns and ethereals. The ethereals are probably my favorite for grinding in Nagrand as their loot is decent, they’re often in dense groups, and they’re relatively easy to gather up. The voidspawns surrounding Oshu’gun are plentiful, but are very spread out, so they may not be as efficient. The mobs here range in level from 64 to 67, making them ideal for players level 62 to 65.

Blade’s Edge Mountains

bladesedgemountains

Points A and B on the map above correspond to the Bloodmaul and Bladespire ogre camps, while Point C on the map above denotes a pack of ethereals. The Bloodmaul ogres range in level from 62 to 66, making them great for players level 60 to 64. The Bladespire ogres range in level from 64 to 67, making them great for players level 62 to 65. The ethereals range in level from 66 to 68, making them ideal for players level 64 to 66.

Netherstorm

netherstorm

Netherstorm provides a lot of great grinding locations. The Manaforges scattered around the zone are packed with blood elves just waiting to fall over and hand you loot. The mobs in these locations range in level from 66 to 69, making them ideal for players level 65 to 67. You should be able to very easily gather up plenty of mobs in these locations, making grinding extremely efficient and lucrative. You can grind quite easily in these spots until you reach level 68 and are ready to make your way to Northrend.

Shadowmoon Valley

shadowmoonvalley

As an alternative, or supplement, to grinding in Netherstorm, there are also a couple locations in Shadowmoon Valley that are worth checking out before you make your way to Northrend.

At Point A on the map, you’ll find a variety of densely packed blood elves. There are a lot of pats in this location, with a couple elites, so you’ll need to have your wits about you. The mobs here range in level from 67 to 70, making them ideal for players level 66 to 68.

At Point B on the map, you’ll find a village (and cave) of nagas to pulverize. There are some casters here, but nothing you can’t handle. The mobs here range in level from 67 to 70, making them great for players level 66 to 68.

Recap

As you can see, the difference between grinding through vanilla and working your way through Outland is that you’re following a very linear path of progression from one zone to the next in Outland, whereas the original game content had you running all over the place from continent to continent as you went along. That being the case, as you might expect, the path of progression through Outland is fairly easy to predict:

  1. Hellfire Peninsula (58 to 60)
  2. Zangarmarsh (58 to 62)
  3. Terokkar Forest (60 to 62)
  4. Nagrand (62 to 65)
  5. Blade’s Edge Mountains (62 to 66)
  6. Netherstorm (65 to 67)
  7. Shadowmoon Valley (66 to 68)

The major difference here is that you’re consistently staying two levels below the “recommended” levels for the zone you’re in. This keeps your experience per kill up, but can provide road blocks if you enjoy questing as you grind.

Once you’ve worked your way through Outland, it’s time to move on to Northrend! We’ll be covering grinding locations for the 70s in the next and final part of this guide. You can refer back to previous parts to this guide here: one, two, three and four.

I’d like to point out, just for the sake of clarification, that I like what you’re doing with this series of posts. My comments are simply meant to expand on what you’ve said and offer a bit more advice on some things here and there.

That being said: when AoE grinding for the sake of leveling, the loot that is dropped by the mobs shouldn’t be the deciding factor in whether or not you attack a certain group of mobs.

I like that you mentioned the buzzards (Carrion Birds) in this post for the meat they drop. While their loot isn’t as good as the humanoids in Hellfire, they are better for leveling than the humanoids are because of how many of them are packed into the small spaces that they take up. The more mobs you can take down at once, the higher your experience gain is. To heck with the drops, if you’re leveling then you’re looking for experience not loot. It’s certainly nice to have both, but you shouldn’t pass up great experience, just for more loot.

If you’re doing it to level, then I would highly recommend that you take these birds on every chance you get. Certainly go for the other areas pointed out here as well, just don’t focus solely on them if you’re grinding for the sake of leveling.

Zangarmarsh has a few places, as you pointed out, but for the most part the mobs there aren’t ideal. The only reason I would bother coming here at all if you are AoE Grinding with a Prot Paladin would be for the sake of grinding rep with Sporegar so that you can get the Petrified Lichen Shield. And if you’re AoE Grinding with a Prot Pally then I whole heartedly suggest you look into getting that shield as it’s the best one in the game for grinding. Once you have the rep you need for the shield though, I would leave ZM and never go back.

Nagrand is full of potential all throughout. I love that zone. You can grind your heart out just about everywhere here. I also suggest you solo all of the elite mobs running around here for their quests. Durn will be the only exception, though you could come back after level 70 to take him on by yourself.

BEM and NS I have no comment on because I skip those zones almost entirely on every character. Terokkar Forest isn’t great either. The areas you pointed out are the ones I would suggest as well, but overall I don’t care much for this zone.

Shadowmoon Valley on the other hand should definitely have the steps around Black Temple mentioned. There is one elite over there that will absolutely eat your face, so avoid him when he’s patrolling around the area. I have soloed him three times, but if other mobs spawn while you’re fighting him you will most likely end up dead.

Blood Elves in this area are packed in huge groups that are amazing for grinding. They have a quick respawn rate which is an excellent feature, and every one them is entirely melee. Another great feature of these mobs is that they have fast attack speeds. The faster they attack, the faster your reflective damage grinds them down into loot. They drop three different Rep items, netherweave cloth, and a decent number of green items as well.

All things considered I wouldn’t hesitate to say that the steps around Black Temple are the single best place for AoE Grinding in all of Outlands. Level 65-66 is probably your best bet for starting to grind near Black Temple.

    Hello!

I am totally new to Paladin’s, well new and new, have managed to quest myself to 35.

I have two questions I hope you can help me with as I will be swapping over to prot and AoE from Retri now.

    1. I assume that I should ditch the slow 2H I have and go for 1H + Shield, should I try to get a slow or fast 1H weapon?

    2. What stats to go for, stamina and strength along with block/parry/defense?

Oh and one more question, soloing instances sounds very fun :) specially if I could do the bosses I have a chance for nice gear upgrades. Is this actually viable, can I actually down bosses that are close to my lvl (a few lvls under me I assume). What instances can I kill bosses in at what lvl? I udnerstand this is a hard question, but Psynister mentioned doing Uldaman solo, what lvl were you then?

Thank you very much for taking time to answer my question!

    Have a nice summer

While the Clefthoofs in Nagrand may be tempting, do not attempt to take them on. They roam around the giant crystal in herds of about 5 regular ones and a bull. You could probably take on one herd, but taking on 2 herd will be about impossible due to the fact they will chain stun you till next Tuesday.
