Continuing with our Paladin AoE grinding guide (Part 1 and Part 2), today we’ll be looking at prime grinding locations for the 40s. Parts one and two of the guide covered the best talents for grinding, buffing properly, best types of mobs to grind and grinding locations to get you through the 30s. Let’s talk about some grinding spots to help you through the 40s.
The 40s
The 30s took you through Duskwood, Hillsbrad Foothills, Arathi Highlands, Scarlet Monastery, Dustwallow Marsh and the Swamp of Sorrows. With those locations under your belt, you should have a feel for your grinding flow now and you’re ready to take on more challenging mobs as you work your way through higher levels.
Remember, for best results while grinding, you want to be in areas that may seem to be a little too high for you. The mobs found in these locations should be yellow, or better yet, orange to you. Grinding on mobs that are a bit higher than you will net more experience per kill, and your talents should give you plenty of survivability to deal with higher level mobs.
The Badlands

In the far Southwest corner of the Badlands, you’ll find a pretty good supply of ogres to massacre. Most notably, you’ll find Dustbelcher Lords, Dustbelcher Maulers, Dustbelcher Ogre Mages, Dustbelcher Shamans, and Dustbelcher Wyrmhunters. These mobs range in level from 40 to 45, so they should provide solid grinding for at least a couple levels. This spot is ideal for players level 40 to 43.
Feralas

There are two good spots for grinding in central Feralas, so you can take your pick of the mobs you’d like to decimate with extreme prejudice.
Point A on the map shown above corresponds to a group of ogres. These mobs range in level from 41 to 46. You’ll want to be careful in this particular spot, as there are a number of different casters scattered throughout the area. (Worth noting, the ogres in this area are part of the quests The High Wilderness-Alliance and The Ogres of Feralas-Horde, so you can AoE grind and complete quests simultaneously for maximum experience.)
Point B on the map above corresponds to a group of knolls. These mobs range in level from 40 to 44. There are a few casters here as well, but they’re not as densely packed as the ogres so they’re easy to avoid. The downside, however, is that the mobs in this location are less densely packed in general, making gathering up large groups at a time a bit more difficult, so be wary of that.
These locations are ideal for players level 40 to 44.
Tanaris

Tanaris also offers a few different options for grinding locations.
Point A on the map above, in Southwestern Tanaris, corresponds to another group of ogres (clearly, the 40s are great for players with an extreme dislike of ogres looking to annihilate whole pockets of population). These mobs range in level from 45 to 48, and there are only a few casters to be concerned about. The mobs are relatively close together, so pulling shouldn’t be too difficult.
Point B on the map above, on the Eastern coast of Tanaris, corresponds to a group of humans known as the Southsea Pirates. These mobs range in level from 39 to 45 and are primarily melee-combat mobs.
Finally, Point C on the map above, in Northeastern Tanaris, corresponds to another group of humans: the Wastewater gang. These groups are fairly tightly packed, and there are a few casters to be concerned about, but pulling one or two casters at a time should not prove too difficult. These mobs range in level from 40 to 45.
Depending on which location you choose, Tanaris is ideal for players level 40 to 45.
Felwood

Once again, you find yourself with a couple options for location. One thing I would like to note before going into descriptions of the two locations identified on the map is that there are a couple sections that I didn’t include, intentionally. There are a couple of spots in Felwood with humans, specifically in Jaedenar. The reason I chose not to include that location is because the area is populated primarily by dense packs of casters that can quickly make life kind of miserable. There is a quest in the zone that will require you to kill them, and if you choose to complete the quest, you’ll see what I mean. Now, let’s talk about the places you should be grinding in Felwood!
Whether you choose to grind at Point A in Southern Felwood or Point B in Northern Felwood will depend largely on your level. Both areas are populated by furbolgs that you’ll be asked to kill for a quest (Point A: Timbermaw Ally and Point B: Deadwood of the North), and the only major difference between the two areas is the level of the mobs found there. The mobs at Point A range in level from 47 to 50 and the mobs at Point B range in level from 52 to 55.
These locations are ideal for players level 45 to 53.
Western Plaguelands

This is easily one of my favorite grinding spots, and always has been–on all of the toons I’ve leveled high enough to safely get here, ever since “vanilla” WoW when you had to fight the gold farmers for mobs here. The mobs at Sorrow Hill in the southern section of the Western Plaguelands are plentiful, densely packed, there are no casters, and the drops are a great source of income. If that weren’t enough, the spot is also close to a nearby flight-path making travel a breeze.
The mobs here range in level from 49 to 52, making it ideal for players level 47 to 50.
While you’re in the neighborhood, be sure to swing by Uther’s Tomb and pay your respects.
Recap
Let’s do a quick recap of the locations we’ve covered this time around:
- The Badlands (40 to 43)
- Feralas (40 to 44)
- Tanaris (40 to 45)
- Felwood (45 to 53)
- Western Plaguelands (57 to 50)
The next part of this guide will, of course, pick up where this one left off, covering grinding locations for the 50s. In case you missed them, don’t forget to check out parts one and two of this guide. If you’ve got a favorite grinding spot for the 40s that I’ve missed, be sure to share it in the comments!

Awesome stuff, thanks a lot

Another excellent place in Badlands is just south of that cluster of rocks you see on the map right below Kargath. There is a cluster of buzzards circling a big rib cage (as always) on the south side of that little mountain that is excellent for grinding. They average around level 43 if I remember correctly, and they are great for grinding. They have a decent attack speed (which means more reflective damage), they also deal a fairly small amount of damage, and they drop meat that is excellent for your own cooking skill as well for selling on the AH. People always want to level cooking, but they hate grinding their own meat. Pulling all of them in one go is a bit of a chore unless you use Consecration to kite them, but it’s an excellent spot.
Yet another place in Badlands is the Uldaman instance itself. A lot of the mobs in there are actually trash mobs instead of elites. I soloed this instance 1 level above its suggested level with no problems at all. And yes, the instance has been nerfed so that you can clear the whole thing solo, the switches no longer require three people to open the doors. There are several good armor pieces that drop in here for a Prot Paladin, and a couple of decent weapons too.
Felwood has a lot of potential in it, though I would include the Bears through the region as excellent sourcing of grinding as well. Not only do they hang out in clusters all over the map, but the meat that they drop is almost required to level your cooking skill and again is an excellent seller on the AH, even above and beyond the buzzards in Badlands.
The best place for grinding in the 40s, in my opinion, is Tanaris. The pirates you pointed out on the east cost there are perfect for grinding. They drop a lot of loot, are almost entirely melee (except for the gunners who aren’t much of a threat), and they have a pretty fast respawn rate as well. By the time you’re done looting one group the other should be close to respawning if they haven’t already.

Tanaris was great for grinding. The other spots you mention are a great addition, though I do tend to shy away from grinding on beasts simply because they don’t tend to drop coins and/or cloth. You do make an excellent point about meat prices at that level on the AH, though. You’d be surprised how much a single stack will go for on most servers.
Beasts never drop cloth, and according to wowwiki are supposed to be unable to drop coins as well though I have found coins on beasts before.
I’ve sold stacks of meat from level 20 and 30 areas for up to 44g, so there’s some serious money to be made. It is *highly* server dependent though. My previous server had meat prices through the roof, while my current one has little markets here and there that are good but as a whole meat prices suck here.
Some cloth sells well, other cloth is crap. Coin drops aren’t bad, but really they aren’t that great either. You’re talking copper and silver for most of the game while leveling, and if you compare the gold from that to the gold you get from selling the random trash that drops off of beasts you would either break even or see only a slight variation one way or the other.
There are also a lot of items that beasts drop that are used in professions that also sell well. Large Fangs for instance start dropping in WC and shortly thereafter. I’ve sold the fangs for up to 4g each. You’re going to have to grind an awful lot of humanoids at that level to get 4g worth of coins to drop.

Uldaman solo, sounds interesting, was that at lvl 48?
Curious as you manged to kill the bosses, I really need to solo some instances while I try the AoE out, maybe I can get some gear this way.
Still only 35 though and retri atm.
Thank you in advance,
